UEI Vegas Grad Turns Healthcare Experience into a Long-Term Career
For nearly two decades, Kasey Weaver built her resume across a wide spectrum of entry-level positions. She worked as a caregiver, medication technician, security officer, hotel front desk clerk, tax preparer, and resident transport driver at an assisted living facility.
While diverse, the jobs all served a single purpose: keeping her head above water. But merely getting by was no longer sustainable.
“I got myself so deep into debt that I couldn’t afford to work minimum-wage jobs anymore,” she recalled. “I had to do something to better myself and build earning power.”
With the backing of her husband, who covered the household expenses so she could focus full-time on professional training, Kasey decided the moment had come to invest in her future. She enrolled in the Medical Billing and Insurance Coding (MBIC) program at United Education Institute (UEI) in Las Vegas.
Her goal was clear: translate 17 years of informal healthcare experience into a specialized, credentialed career.
Today, more than a year after completing her program, Kasey has achieved that vision. She serves as a medical billing specialist for one of Nevada’s premier billing organizations, managing high-stakes accounts for personal injury law firms throughout the Las Vegas metropolitan area.
Reflecting on her progress, she credits her determination, hands-on training at UEI, and one dedicated instructor with providing the technical mastery and confidence she needed to break through.
Turning Experience into a Career
Long before arriving at UEI, Kasey had accumulated extensive experience in patient care.
Working as a caregiver, medication technician, and care coordinator, she interacted with patients daily, becoming fluent in clinical terminology, chart documentation requirements, and HIPAA privacy compliance. She valued the patient care mission but understood the daily strains across the healthcare delivery system.
“I worked in healthcare for 17 years,” Kasey said. “I already had the baseline medical knowledge and terminology down, which gave me a solid running start.”
What she lacked, however, was a technical specialization that commanded competitive pay. Vocational training offered an accelerated, outcome-oriented bridge directly into administrative healthcare.
“The first institution that stood out during my research was UEI, and it was right in my neighborhood,” Kasey said. “I toured the campus, appreciated the professionalism of the admissions team, and knew immediately it was the right fit.”
Medical billing and insurance coding aligned seamlessly with her background and aptitude.
“I’m very comfortable with numbers and adept at patient communication over the phone,” she noted. “It was a natural extension of my skills.”
As she progressed through the modules, Kasey stepped into a leadership role on campus. Selected as a Student Ambassador, she mentored peers, shared study strategies, and served as an encouraging guide for incoming cohorts.

The Instructor Who Made an Impact
While Kasey values the complete curriculum, she highlights one mentor who fundamentally reshaped her educational journey: instructor Kanisha Moten.
From their very first lab module, Moten’s enthusiasm for reimbursement systems and student mentorship stood out.
“I connected with her teaching style immediately,” Kasey said. “Her energy and accountability kept me anchored throughout the entire program.”
Beyond lecturing on diagnostic and procedural codes, Moten invested directly in her students’ professional maturity.
“She went above and beyond for every single student in that room,” Kasey said. “Anyone who walked into her classroom was inspired. She brought intense passion, clear communication, and steady support every single day.”
Moten also encouraged Kasey to embrace her role as a Student Ambassador, building professional presence and interpersonal confidence.
“Her guidance was invaluable,” Kasey added. “Without her mentorship, I honestly don’t know if I would have made it to the graduation stage.”
The analytical rigor of the program prepared Kasey for the high-volume demands of revenue cycle management.
“The core technical foundation I rely on daily involves procedural coding, claim submission protocols, and strict attention to detail,” she said. “Auditing claims for accuracy, interpreting complex insurance guidelines, and correcting discrepancies prior to submission are all competencies I mastered during my training.”
From Student to Graduate
After graduating in May 2025, Kasey quickly leveraged her training to secure a position in administrative healthcare.
Today, as a Medical Billing Specialist for a leading Nevada billing group, she balances complex accounts requiring sharp coding precision, statutory compliance, and clear communication with legal and healthcare providers.
The work is rigorous and detail-oriented—precisely the professional environment she envisioned when enrolling at the College. More significantly, it has fundamentally transformed her financial trajectory and self-perception.
“Graduating from UEI gave me deep confidence in my own potential,” Kasey said. “It proved to me that I can master complex technical systems and build a lasting career in healthcare administration.”
That self-assurance continues to guide her long-term career roadmap.
“I feel secure in my ability to take on new regulatory challenges, advance professionally, and seize bigger opportunities,” she said. “It completely shifted my mindset from just working another job to cultivating a lifelong career I’m genuinely proud of.”
