After Years of Uncertainty, Mesa Student Finds Purpose at UEI
For a long time, Xavier Melendez said he felt like he was drifting without much direction.
He bounced between retail jobs, overnight hospitality work, and a few different attempts at going back to school. But nothing ever quite felt right. Even after moving to Arizona at the end of 2024 for what he hoped would be a fresh start, this uncertainty followed him.
“I spent a good number of years wondering what I was supposed to be doing with my life,” Xavier said. “I felt like I was going nowhere.”
Unsurprisingly, that mindset started to wear on him. By his mid-20s, he said the frustration had turned into anxiety about the future and whether he would ever find a meaningful career path.
Then one morning while scrolling through social media after another overnight shift, he came across a video about UEI College. Just a few days later, after touring UEI’s Mesa campus and taking a deeper look at the school’s Medical Assistant program, he made a decision that would change the direction of his life.
And today, after completing the program and now training at his externship site, Xavier said UEI helped him discover something he had been missing for years: confidence, purpose, and a vision for the future.
Finding Something That Finally Felt Right
Before enrolling at UEI, Xavier’s life lacked consistency. He spent years moving between jobs and different states, trying to find a path that would lead him toward a career he loved. Most recently, this included working overnight shifts at a Hilton hotel while keeping an eye out for better opportunities.
He also explored different schools and programs, but nothing seemed to stick. While some options grabbed his attention, nothing really aligned with his interests or gave him the feeling that it would add meaning to his life.
That changed when UEI reached out after he submitted his information online.
“When I came in for the campus tour, I really liked the vibe,” Xavier said. “The labs looked like actual clinics, and seeing how hands-on everything was really spoke to me.”
He already had some interest in healthcare. The idea of working to help people — an environment where no two days were likely to feel the same — was intriguing.
“A lot of people I see in the medical field seem happy,” he said. “And it feels good knowing you’re helping people.”
After learning more about UEI’s Medical Assistant program, he enrolled. Classes felt intimidating at first, and he admits to initially being quiet, nervous, and unsure of himself. But he had a plan to get through it: set the bar low and just squeak through the program.
He didn’t realize at the time how much he was underestimating himself.
“I thought I would do just enough to pass,” Xavier said. “I didn’t expect to stand out like I did.”

Growing Confidence One Class at a Time
Xavier said the combination of hands-on learning, supportive classmates, and instructors who genuinely pushed students to do their best helped him grow more comfortable and more confident.
One instructor in particular, Michelle Gracia, made a major impact.
“She’s been really great and always pushes her students to do their best,” he said.
As the program progressed, Xavier started opening up more in class and participating in ways he normally wouldn’t have before. He credits his peers for giving him the confidence to excel.
“My classmates helped me get out of my shell,” he said. “They helped me see things in myself that I wasn’t seeing.”
That encouragement translated into real academic success. Xavier became a student ambassador early in the program and earned recognition on the President’s List by maintaining strong grades throughout his modules.
For someone who once questioned whether he even belonged in school, those accomplishments meant a lot to Xavier.
“It feels good,” he said. “Especially things like drawing blood and learning the hands-on skills. At first it was nerve-wracking, but now it feels like an accomplishment.”
And the more he learned, the more his long-term goals started becoming clearer. What once felt like a dead-end future now feels like the beginning of a career path with room to grow.
“I want to stay in the medical field and keep climbing,” Xavier said. “I want to keep expanding my knowledge.”
Now in his externship, Xavier is already thinking about where he hopes the field can take him next. His immediate goal is to gain experience as a medical assistant, ideally in a hospital setting. Long term, he hopes to eventually become a doctor or an X-ray technician.
“Before UEI, I felt like I didn’t really have a future,” he said. “Now I actually feel like I’m building one. UEI has been really good for me. I met really great people here and created a support system. It changed my life for the better.”
