Koi's journey to becoming an HVAC student at UEI demonstrates that life may not always follow a straightforward path.

HVAC Student in Chula Vista Honored with Scholarship

Koi Calloway, an HVAC student at UEI College in Chula Vista, has experienced numerous life changes but one decision has been life-altering: enrolling in UEI’s HVAC program. His path to UEI was not a straight line—he grew up in El Cajon and after graduating from high school, he first attended a private college in Tennessee for a year. There, he made new friends but found that the traditional 4-year college route wasn’t the right fit at the time. While he was away at college, his parents moved to Arkansas. So, when he decided to leave college, he joined them there. Koi worked various jobs in Arkansas, before realizing he needed a new direction.

After seven years in Arkansas, with a lot of prayer and determination, Koi returned to California, driven by a mix of his faith, the desire for a fresh start, and to reconnect with his long-time girlfriend. “I had this overwhelming feeling of needing to make a change. It was like a divine intervention,” he said.

Then came UEI College. “I didn’t know what HVAC was at the time, but when UEI told me about their programs, I decided to give it a try—and I’m so glad I did,” he said.

Since enrolling in the program, Koi has flourished, not just as a student but also as a student ambassador at the campus, guiding and helping others.

“Honestly, the decision to join UEI wasn’t something I had planned—it just kind of happened. But I’m really glad it did,” Koi said. “At first, I was worried about money and how I’d make it work, but when I stayed true to myself and kept trying my best, other people noticed.”

In yet another a twist of fate, Koi even earned a scholarship thanks to his hard work and authenticity. “I never expected to win a scholarship,” he said. “The staff in the office saw something in me and encouraged me to apply for a scholarship. That’s how supportive everyone is here. They want to see you succeed, and they give you the tools to do that.”

Koi was selected as one of the recipients for a CAPPS General Scholarship from the California Foundation for Private & Postsecondary Schools. UEI College is a member of CAPPS and Koi decided to apply for one of the annual scholarships.

“Koi is a very positive student who always strives to bring a smile to everyone he is around. Despite at times struggling to make ends meet himself, he never hesitates to help someone in need,” said Elizabeth Sedano, Student Finance Advisor at UEI Chula Vista. “He is the type of person we need more of in this world and a perfect example of a great UEI student maintaining good grades and attendance to better himself and his living situation. Truly someone to be proud of and deserving of the scholarship.”

“I am beyond grateful for everything. UEI has been such a great place for me. I’ve met amazing people, learned more than I ever thought possible, and the hands-on experience in HVAC has been incredible,” Koi said. “It’s just so satisfying to take something apart, figure out what’s wrong, and then put it back together. I’ve always loved doing that.”

With graduation on the horizon and a job in the HVAC field in his sights, Koi is optimistic about his future. He credits UEI with providing the practical skills he needs to succeed and a supportive community that helped him grow. “This program has given me the confidence to go after what I want in life. Once I land a job, I’m planning to start building the new future with my girlfriend,” he said.
