RECORD MEDICAL HISTORIES OF PATIENTS
One of the key roles as a medical assistant will be recording the medical histories of patients. It is important that you know how to properly do this as it is crucial to patient care. Without proper medical history documentation, doctors and nurses would not know how to treat a patient or what the patient is allergic to or the symptoms he or she is experiencing.
As a medical assistant, you will document a patient’s medical history when the patient arrives for their appointment. You will be responsible for relaying this information to the doctor as well.
TAKE PATIENT’S VITAL SIGNS
In your role as a medical assistant, you will, at some point, take patient’s vital signs. This is usually done before the patient arrives in the exam room or as they enter the exam room.
Some of the vital signs you will be responsible for taking include blood pressure, temperature, height and weight, and heart rate. Often, you will also measure the patient’s eye sight, hearing, or even take measurements.

Reina Rodriguez is a Medical Assistant Instructor at the Encino campus and she has seen her students succeed and learn the most from the available Human Anatomy and Physiology course. She believes that this course gives students the understanding they need of the human body system to be successful in their role. She also believes that the Administrative section of the course is beneficial because it teaches students about copayments, insurance, and appointment scheduling.
Brendalyth Alvarez, a Medical Assistant Instructor at the Huntington Park campus believes that students learn a lot of valuable knowledge in the MOD 160 course. This course introduces students to practical applications of where and how they will use their skills. The students will learn how to use a blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, height and weight scales, and thermometers properly.
