When Darshel decided to return to a career in healthcare, he enrolled in the Medical Assistant program at UEI College

A Lifelong Learner’s Path Back to Healthcare

After working as a surgical medical assistant in Arizona, Darshel Landry never imagined he’d find himself back in the classroom. However, a move to California during the pandemic—and the need to recertify his credentials—led him to UEI College in West Covina, where he found a supportive community that reignited his passion for healthcare. He enrolled in the Medical Assistant program.

“When I first visited UEI, I was impressed by the diversity and sense of community,” Darshel shared. “It felt like a place where people from all walks of life came together for common goals. That energy was inspiring.”

At first, Darshel was apprehensive about starting over. Balancing work, school, family responsibilities, and his own personal growth seemed overwhelming. However, with the support of his instructors and peers, he quickly found his footing. “The staff and teachers at UEI made me feel like I wasn’t alone in this. They checked in on me, supported me, and genuinely cared about my progress,” he said.

Darshel’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. He juggles his coursework alongside helping his aging grandparents and maintaining his role as a deep-water lifeguard and swim instructor.

“At times, it felt like I was in school forever, but I realized this is what I want to do. It adds value to my life and reminds me why I love helping others,” he said.

Upon graduating, Darshel is excited to re-enter the medical field with renewed skills and a fresh perspective. Looking ahead, he dreams of continuing his education to become a nurse and possibly pursuing a doctoral degree in oncology or medical research.

“My time at UEI has reminded me of the importance of community and the pursuit of knowledge. This experience has not only prepared me for my career but also reignited my belief in the power of education and the impact we can have on others’ lives,” he reflected.

For Darshel, recertifying as a medical assistant has turned into a step toward creating meaningful change for himself and for others.
