From Uncertain Paths to a Clear Future: Steven’s Journey to HVAC
Steven Morell had experience at different career programs and schools but from the very first phone call he noticed a difference at UEI College in Huntington Park.
“My recruiter called me at 11:30 in the morning and we just connected instantly,” he said. “She asked when I wanted to come in for a tour and by 2 p.m., I was on campus signing paperwork and getting started. Now I’m in the HVAC field and I’m doing so well.”
Steven had always been drawn to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). A soccer coach he once admired worked in refrigeration, and the way he carried himself left a lasting impression. But despite his interest, Steven had struggled to find the support he needed to break into the field.
“I’ve worked in retail and grocery, stocking shelves and doing inventory. I tried other fields too, but I couldn’t get anyone to open the door for me,” Steven explained. “UEI got me through the door.”
Today, Steven is thriving in UEI’s HVAC Technician program, thanks in part to an instructor he considers one of the best he’s ever had.
“I think so much of my instructor. He’s a great man. He knows what he’s doing, and he knows how to teach. I’m learning so much from him, and I feel understood as a student,” Steven said. “Since I want to get into commercial refrigeration, having an instructor with that experience is exactly what I need to succeed.”

Halfway through the program, Steven has already gained hands-on training in ductwork and basic refrigeration. The lab experiences, he says, have been the highlight of his learning so far.
Though he already holds a business degree, Steven admits that finding his true career path took some trial and error. He previously tried other programs including CNA training and even dog grooming, but nothing stuck.
“This is different,” Steven said. “At UEI, I’m learning the trade the right way. I’m focused. I take notes, do my assignments, participate in discussions, and pay attention in class. I’m goal oriented, and I know this is the path I want.”
Looking ahead, Steven hopes to work for a large company in commercial refrigeration, where he can put his preventative maintenance training to use. “They need things running smoothly, and I want to be part of making that happen,” he explained.
For Steven, what sets UEI apart isn’t just the training—it’s the people.
“What makes UEI unique is the staff,” he said. “They know how to talk to people. They know how to be a person. Everybody has their own problems, but the friendliness of the campus stands out. They really understand that people are people. I’ve just made great connections with everyone.”
To anyone considering enrolling, Steven’s advice is simple: Give it a chance.
“It all works if you’re willing to work. Don’t expect anyone to hand you anything. Just listen to the instructor, do your homework, and do your best. Stay motivated and it will happen,” he said. “I probably should have gone to UEI years ago—I just didn’t know they were here. If I had, I would’ve started sooner.”
With the knowledge and skills he’s building at UEI, Steven is confident about the opportunities ahead.
“This is a field I know I can get into. There are so many doors that will open. I just have to show up and put in the work.”
