When Gerald had to pivot to a new career during the economic downturn following COVID, he found the HVAC program at UEI Morrow

Building a Future in HVAC at UEI Morrow

After years of successfully running his own trucking company, Gerald Flewellen never imagined he would have to start over. But when the economy took a downturn, so did his business. Watching his savings disappear, he knew he had to pivot—and fast. With a determination to find a long-term career, Gerald turned to research. That’s when he discovered the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program, at United Education Institute (UEI) in Morrow.

“HVAC stood out because of its stability, and it also matched a lot of the skills I already had,” Gerald explained.

His next step was finding the right training program. A search led him to UEI Morrow. After making a few phone calls and visiting the campus, he knew it was the right fit. The schedule allowed him to continue to work while attending classes, striking a balance that made his transition smoother.

“The schedule has been perfect,” he said. “I go to school from 1 to 6 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I have online learning as well. It’s allowed me to keep working while I build my skills.”

The hands-on training at UEI has been exactly what Gerald needed to prepare for the field. What he loves most is that HVAC isn’t just about heating and cooling—it’s a trade that connects with other industries like plumbing and electrical work. The knowledge he’s gaining has given him confidence that he’ll be ready for anything.

“HVAC doesn’t limit you,” Gerald said. “The mechanical and electrical training we get can translate into other fields, which makes me feel even more prepared for my future.”

His instructors, Mr. William and Mr. Leonard, have played a big role in his success. Both have decades of industry experience, and their guidance has been invaluable.

“They don’t just teach the material—they share real-life wisdom,” Gerald said. “They’ve been in the field, and they pass down knowledge that you can’t learn from a textbook.”

Although Gerald has an entrepreneurial background, he plans to work for a company first, gaining experience before starting his own business. His long-term vision? To build a company so successful that in ten years, it carries his name.

“My goal is to work smart, not hard,” he said. “I want to take care of my family, create opportunities for others, and eventually build something great.”

With his ambition, training, and dedication, there’s no doubt Gerald Flewellen is on the path to achieving his vision—one step at a time.
